| Paula Barr is a world-renowned artist, based in New York City. She was reared in Mobile, Alabama, in the American south, where her roots still run deep. She then ventured to New York City to establish her reputation as an artist while still a young woman. | |||
Paula’s work has been acquired by museums, public and private collections worldwide. In 1985, with the birth of her son, she picked up a camera and began taking the sensibilities of the painting studio into her photography. During this period of aesthetic transition, she exhibited groupings of painting, collage and photography. It was with the body of work that she developed the photomurals for which she would become known. Paula’s public art commissions have always striven to be at the leading edge of technology, and have helped in the development of many photo trends and technical advancements. She holds a patent for glass photo tiles, a tiling system that encapsulates archival photo images. One of her public works holds the Guinness record for the world’s largest photo. Paula has always used the environment as a springboard for her art. Gulf Coast Echo is a project she was proud to premier as an invited artist at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, 2008. The show, portrays Paula’s personal images of the Gulf Coast region before and after Hurricane Katrina. Paula founded SiteImages, Inc in 1982, a nonprofit arts organization that develops public art projects. She now serves as artistic director. Gulf Coast Echo is sponsored by Site Images, and will travel the globe as a model for recovery and renewal in disaster areas and to keep the light shining on the people of the Gulf Coast region. Paula is currently busy with production of three books, the Gulf Coast Echo traveling show with an accompanying limited edition portfolio, and an exhibition of her 3-D life-scale portraits, photo by frederique porter |
